Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
PCOS
What is it?
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or simply PCOS is a common condition in women of childbearing age. While the cause
is unknown, hormonal balance is crucial to this condition. Increases in estrogen levels cause an imbalance of female hormones. For some women this leads to the production of multiple follicles which all mature at the same time in the ovaries leading to the formation of cysts. For many women, their cycle becomes very irregular and often many women with this condition do
not ovulate. In addition, abnormal hair growth on the face and arms, acne on the chin and chest,
and insulin resistance are common characteristics of this syndrome. For many women weight gain is an issue and they have difficulty losing weight.
Key Points:
- Abnormal menstrual cycles, including long cycles or spotting
- Abnormal hair growth
- Acne
- Blood sugar problems
- Obesity
- Common cause of infertility
How do we treat it?
PCOS is a hormonal imbalance which occurs when too much estrogen is produced in the body. In addition, the female sex hormones are integrated with both the adrenal and thyroid endocrine systems. Thus, one of the first steps of treatment is to balance all these three hormonal systems. To achieve this we start with a healthy, daily routine that works for you. Our routine will include such areas as nutrition, medicinal support (herbals and vitamins) and basic treatments that support your overall health and hormonal function. In order to regain health, patients with PCOS must make changes that will promote healing and balance. In addition, we will recommend remedies that restore proper hormonal cycling to your body, so that you will begin to experience normal menstrual cycles. As we work together the symptoms of PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) will subside and become less problematic often with normal periods returning.
